Poems of the Midnight Mirror Series is an ongoing collaboration between Bo Hyde and EJ Lee that explores intimacy, language, and the preservation of voice.
Written in the stillness of late night hours, Hyde’s poems reflect moments of closeness, vulnerability, and emotional presence. EJ Lee translates and reformats each text into the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), transforming the written word into its phonetic structure — a visual rendering of how it is truly spoken.
The series examines how emotion lives not only in meaning, but in pronunciation — in breath, cadence, and inflection. By rendering these poems in IPA, the work seeks to preserve the intimacy of voice itself, creating a lasting imprint of expression beyond the moment in which it was first written.
The “midnight mirror” becomes both metaphor and method: a space where language reflects back, held, translated, and sustained.
